More than 60% of this population is covered by self-insured (or “self-funded”) plans: the employers or unions themselves, not insurance companies, pay the medical bills of their workers and workers’ dependents. Increasingly, health care expenses among these workers and families are driving the nation’s reckoning over the cost of living and the policy shift toward affordability. |
