More than half of Americans — approximately 178 million people — have employer-sponsored health insurance, the coverage sector where health care prices have risen the fastest. More than 60% of this population is covered by self-insured (or “self-funded”) plans: the employers or unions themselves, not insurance companies, pay the medical bills of their workers and workers’ dependents.
