End-of-life care and organ donation have evolved in parallel. Over time, medical, legal, and cultural shifts have repeatedly reshaped the way death is determined and the ways in which organs may be ethically procured, but organ-donation practices have always been expected to adhere to the dead donor rule (DDR). In the past decade, end-of-life norms have undergone another transformation: more than 200 million people now live in jurisdictions where some form of assisted death is permitted.
